Itinerary description

We did this hike with An Oige on Sunday 29 August 2010. The bus brought us to the Drumgoff Parking area and the Glenmalure Lodge, near Rathdrum. The walk started on the road, but is mainly through forest service roads and tracks, and along fairly clearly identifiable tracks along the ridge of the mountain. The route signposting is excellent. The majority of the route is excellent for walking, but there are a few areas that require care. The views are spectacular. At REST2 it is possible to ascend to Fananierin Mountain, but we skipped this because of lack of time to make our bus. This area is known as the O’Byrne Country, called after the O’Byrne Clan who took refuge there after they were beaten in battle by the Norman invaders in the 16th century. This is a challenging walk, but with no major difficulties.
