Itinerary description
Things to take into consideration:
- few possibilities to hide from the sun until the hike reaches the forest ;
- three undeep river crossings ;
- beware of shepherd's dogs, keep sheep flocks at safe distance.
All credit goes to mr. Mark Elliott, who suggests this hike in his excellent Azerbaijan Guide (5th edition). This book is sold in all major azerbaijani book shops (e.g. Libraff, Ali and Nino, .. ).
Waypoints
Downhill towards the river
You might find some typical Gəncə vegetation (see 2nd picture)
'View' on castle Charek
Picture taken in July. With less vegetation, the brownish castle might be visible on the hilltop on the other side. Another (better) view is available from the meadow downhill (further down towards monastery).
Into the woods
These woods are made for walking. Path goes up a bit, then stays level before winding back down towards a river.
First rivercrossing
First out of three. All very easy in July due to low water level. Earlier in the year the crossing might be a bit more refreshing
Crossing, follow the path in center of picture
Cross the ford, then go uphill, see path on picture.
Along the right bank
This first part of the hike is mostly along the right (i.e. East) bank of the small river below
Go down
Go down along the grassy patch on the left (see picture) towards the little stream below. There's a little path. Cross the stream and continue following the path.
Turn left
After these small ruins, take left. The shabby municipal house (cf. Mark Elliott's guide) should be behind you.
