Itinerary description
The "Donkey Trail" hiking trail from the village of Aqbat al Biyut down to the wadi and the ruined village. We did not make it to the waterfall because of time, but we hope next time to complete the trail from the other path that leads to the same destination, called "Jebel Stairway Trail" from the village of Al Hilayat.
A 4x4 is necessary to go up Jebel Akhdar, and most of the trail to the village is on gravel and stones. There is maybe about 20 to 30min of off road driving from the paved road. Parking is at the mosque of this small and picturesque village of Aqbat al Biyut. There is a sign with the map and trail information right next to the mosque.
The trail itself is very well marked, with both the 3 colored stripes and the green dots and reflectors. The first half is mainly flat, with the only elevation change being going up and down small bits of wadis. Then you get a spectacular view of the Alila Hotel, at which point you begin a long descent down into the wadi, passing by a helicopter landing pad along the way. There is an empty village at the bottom of the wadi, then the path goes up again a bit along the wadi. Apparently after this there is a waterfall, which we heard but did not see.
Return along the same trail.
