Itinerary description
A loop in the Bukhansan national park next to Dobongsan (Dobong Mt). with summiting it.
Dobongsan has an elevation of 739 m. While following this route you will pass several temples (I did not visit them but you will see signs) and foxholes. The view from the top is absolutely beautiful.
Difficulty.
I would rank it as intermediate. There is no way to get lost since there are many signs to guide you. It is mainly walking uphills on a paved track and man-made steps. Still, it is 900m+ elevation gain that requires good stamina.
The track is becoming interesting at the top when you reach the summit. There are rails to help you to ascend and descend. Later you reach Y-valley. Officially Y-valley is marked as "experts only" but again there are many rails to help you, so I did not have any difficulties there. Overall, it is should be doable by anyone with a good fitness level.
Direction.
I recommend you to do this route in reverse. Y-valley trail is too narrow and mainly people will come from the north. If you do it in reverse you will not have to wait to let people climb.
Public transportation.
The trailhead is not far from Dobongsan metro station (710) of Line 7. Walk along Dobongsan-gil street and after passing multiple hiking stores and street food places you will reach Dobong information center. This is where the route starts. Trailhead location coordinates are 37.686419, 127.035759
Gear.
It significantly depends on the season. For the end of October, I would say you need:
1) High-cut hiking shoes
2) 1+ liters of water, electrolytes
3) fleece jacket
4) windbreaker
5) gloves to hold installed security rails and ropes
Wikiloc in Korea.
When I came to Korea I found that I could not really zoom in on the Wikiloc map after a certain level. I recommend you to download the GPS track on your Garmin, Suunto, or another GPS device and follow the trail rather than rely only on your phone. Those devices will allow you to see the track in detail. Also, offline maps on Wikiloc should work.
