Digermulen (240 inhabitants) knew its heyday from the end of the 19th century until the beginning of the Second World War. Especially the repeated visits of the German Emperor Wilhelm II around 1890 gave the village a real reputation abroad. In the wake of the emperor, several tourist boats found their way to this remote pearl during the interwar period.
There is not much to see today of this activity. The situation of the village may be best described as 'comatose'. Ideal for anyone looking for peace and quiet.
The church of Digermulen was inaugurated in 1951. From the slightly lower cemetery you have a beautiful view over the strait Raftsund. In clear weather you can even see the bridge that connects the Lofoten with the Vesterålen 20 kilometers further north.
Emperor Wilhelm II often used the so-called Digermulkollen, a 384 meter high hill with a mighty view in the four sky directions. At the top of the Digermulkollen the Keiservarden was erected, a somewhat pompous (?) Monument in honor of the despot.
