Route carried out on 10/28/2018
After two days of sightseeing in Kathmandu, we fly early to the town of Lukla, the gateway to the highest mountains on the planet, and we do it in a small plane where we travel alone with our group together with Tika, our fantastic guide. At Lukla airport, the Sherpas who will accompany us for the rest of the journey, Motti and Radju, are waiting for us, along with the porters who will carry our backpacks during the 14 days of the trek. We are all extremely excited about the adventure ahead of us, and we do not stop looking everywhere so as not to miss any detail. We go to the Mera Lodge, where we have a small snack before starting the route, and after the rigorous presentations of all the components of the expedition, thirteen mountaineers, three Sherpas and seven porters, we start the Everest Base Camp trek.
We started walking north along the central street of Lukla to leave the town through the National Luminary Pasan Lhamu Memorial Gate, built in memory of the first Nepalese woman to ascend Mount Everest in 1993, and who died on the descent after falling. through a crack before her husband's eyes. This first day is a small warm-up of just over 7 km, almost all downhill, which will serve as a first contact for what lies ahead. The number of mountaineers on these first sections is staggering, and the road to Phakding is littered with Lodges and small towns full of local shops and small businesses. We will pass several stupas, Buddhist spiritual monuments that dot the entire route, as well as mounds of Mani stones painted with Buddhist prayers. We will cross the footbridge over the Thadokosi River, the first of the suspension bridges that we will meet on the way, made up of very long cables and wood, and which hang from each side of the bank at an important height covered with colorful prayer flags.
In less than three and a half hours we will arrive at our first lodge in Phakding, the Royal Sherpa Lodge, where we will give a good account of the food they have prepared for us and we will talk excitedly about the first experiences of this our first day. In the afternoon we will take a short walk through this beautiful Nepalese town and we will go to sleep soon, hoping that tomorrow will arrive to continue our adventure.
