De Hoop Reserve is the southernmost reserve in Africa. Unesco heritage, it is especially important for the combined habitat of flora and small fauna. We are far from the Kruger model (big cats) or Hermanus (whales). Here you meet amphibians, reptiles, birds and walk among wetlands and South African fynbos (the ZAR version of the Mediterranean maquis). Some plants are very rare, it seems, but I certainly don't recognize them.
The walk is simple, you go up and down the dunes on the De Hoop Coastal Trail, It can happen to glimpse whale puffs offshore, but above all you appreciate the micro-environment, the surfer waves and the quiet after the glitter of the northern parks .
There is well laid out parking, Koppie Allen a great cafe with facilities.
Be careful walking on the indicated paths. As we know, accustomed to coastal dunes, the microenvironment is very fragile and trampling on some rare endemic species causes considerable damage!
