Itinerary description
Keep in mind that the full loop is over 30km with an insane elevation. This is not a hike for beginners or untrained hikers!! It's 'intermediate' for trained and frequent hikers like myself who are used to mountainous conditions, but not for tourists on a laid-back daytrip. That said,
the trails are in good state and pleasant to walk on (not too rocky or uneven).
To get to the start of the ridge trail you still have to walk 8km from Low Omalo (mainly uphill) over dirt road. The distance is a bit less from high Omalo. If you go by car, you'll have to get back to your vehicle somehow. A taxi or hitchhiking could be an option.
The ridge trail is fantastic, panoramic views all around. You'll be still walking uphill almost the entire ridge. Be very careful for shepherd dogs here, they take their task seriously and are very aggressive. It's best to shout to the shepherd once you see him, as he can keep his dogs in check and secure your safe passing (on the ridge there are no alternative trails nor is their space to get out of their territory).
After the ridge trail a dirt road reaches to Bochorna, allegedly Europe's highest settlement (although more places claim this). This village is abandoned, you can't buy food or drinks here.
ALL WATER SOURCES ARE MARKED ON THIS TRAIL RECORDING. There are water sources just before and after Bochorna. These are the only ones on this entire trail, and only come at the end. On the ridge trail there is no shelter against the elements, no shade. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, even on cloudy days.
The road links up again to the Dartlo-road crossing. This is the best spot to wait for a hitchhike, as it's better trafficked than the previous part. I hitchhiked back from here, after having walked a steep 26km. Walking the last part back to Omalo adds up to 32-35km (depends on the route you take).
