Itinerary description

Day 3. LDO6. Mell Fell Medley. 3 Wainwrights.

Wainwrights: Little Mell Fell 226m, Gowbarrow Fell 481m and Great Mell Fell 537m.

The route starts on a back country road at the base of Great Mell Fell where there are several rough parking spots for around 5-7 cars at the most. From here head South and turn left into Brownrigg farm. There are signposts going through the farm. Follow the signs out the other side and go through the fields as outlined by the gpx track. It is pretty straight forward until just before Greenrow farm. Here there is a barbed wire fence across the footpath and a style positioned on the other side?? Anyway I tore my waterproof trousers here unfortunately!
Once over the fence turn left and go up to the road and turn right. It is not long before you turn off left and follow a wide track for about a kilometre and then there is a foot path all the way to the trig pointed summit of Little Mell Fell. Nice views too.
From here head South and go down the hill down to and across another back road. Follow a rough footpath all way keeping the fence on your right and then turn off left then if you want to take in Greater Meldrum. You come to a stone wall on the other side of GM which you cross and then follow a defined footpath to another trig pointed top, that of Gowbarrow Fell.
Retrace your steps to the wall and then head directly North for about half a kilometre until you get to an OS map marked fence/wall. Now the route was supposed to go straight ahead here but it appears that there are fresh saplings planted at the location and a high fence akin to a deer fence has been erected so you have to take a dog leg around it. Follow the gpx track until you get to yet another back road and then follow this road, with one left turn all the way back to the start point.
The last thing to do is the out and back trip to the indistinct top of Great Mell Fell. This is a stiff steep little climb with about 250m of climbing. This is on good footpaths that are boggy in places but easiy to follow. Once done simply retrace your steps down the hill. All in all a decent day out in the fells!

Parking: Several narrow rough parking areas on a back road. Free.
Route: Back country roads, through a farm, over a barbed wire fence, around a big fence, open moorland and a mix of established and less distinct trails. A scenic hike but hopefully better appreciated in finer weather. A few steep climbs.
Route Statistics: 14km with 740m of ascent done in an all in time of 4hrs 30min.
