Itinerary description

Overview

This is a moderate hike on good stable trail with a blend of all Colorado has to offer, from hiking through open meadows, evergreen stands and views of the mountains and the valley. It is a loop that starts and ends at the same place.

Trail

The trail is non-technical and of good construction. It is wide enough for two people to pass. There is a mix of walking in open sun through meadows, partial sun through sparse vegetation and scrub oak, and full shade in evergreen stands. The trail is a local favorite for horse riding. Also expect to see mountain bikers sharing the trail.

During the course of the hike, there are views of the west plum river valley, Dawson Butte, which is next to the trail on the north, and the front range foothills that border the west plum river valley to the west.

The trail starts and ends at the parking lot for the Dawson Butte Open Space area, which is also the high elevation point for the trail. There are multiple additional trails that extend off of the main Dawson Butte trail, but meet back up with the Dawson Butte trail. The trail goes around private property, so obey signs that prohibit entry. There are locations along the trail with benches for sitting.

Parking

There is ample parking at the trail head, although it is a popular spot and gets busy during the summer, especially with horse trailers.
