Dag 5: Calheta - Funchal

approx. 4 - 5 hours | 12 km | +250 m | -150 m Organizational At 09:00, you will be picked up from your hotel by a transfer organized by Eurohike and taken along the south coast and further up high altitude roads to the starting point in the small mountain village of Boa Morte. You will then hike along the south coast to the famous Cabo Girao viewpoint. You will find a bus stop and a bar there. You will take the bus to Funchal in the afternoon here, see timetable. Optionally, walk from Cabo Girao further to Camara de Lobos or to Funchal. See under options. Your hike You will start the stage in Boa Morte on the Levada do Norte. It leads with the best sea views through typical terraced fields and cultivated landscape with various crops. The path is mostly narrow, in some places there are railings, but it is easy to walk. A minimum of surefootedness and freedom from vertigo is still necessary today! Shortly before the headland of Cabo Giraos, the watercourse disappears in a tunnel and you continue hiking on small paths. Finally, a narrow path leads you along the slope and abruptly meets the access road to the viewing platform Cabo Girao. Enjoy best Levada hiking with wonderful views through varied landscape today! The optional descent to Camara de Lobos is a partly steep path through terraced fields and leads further down along small stairways and alleys. The beach promenade to Funchal is easy to walk and always leads along the shore to the Lido of Funchal. Options From Cabo Girao you can walk down to the pretty fishing village of Camara de Lobos (duration approx. 1 to 1.5 h). From there there are regular buses to Funchal. Take the slow train "Green Train" from Cabo Girao in a fun ride down the coastal road to Camara de Lobos. The little train (on wheels) shuttles back and forth throughout. The trips are very regular, with a little patience it will surely arrive soon at your place (costs approx. € 8,- per person). From Camara de Lobos you walk along the pretty beach promenade in approx. 1.5 h to Funchal, always along the beach. From the Lido of Funchal you can also take one of the many buses to the center for the last 3 km. If you wish to walk all the way to Funchal, you can expect a distance of of 22 - 24 km, depending on the hotel. The option is marked in pink and listed as a separate route.
