Itinerary description

Howth Promontory closes Dublin Bay to the north. In a coastal landscape characterized by marshes and sandy islands, this cape with high cliffs stands out clearly. The promontory is crossed by a beautiful network of paths. Some cross the promontory going up the rocky hill (where there is also a golf course and a dolmen), others (steep and difficult) descend to the beaches located at the foot of the cliffs on the south side. Finally, the most popular and spectacular one goes around the cape on the edge of the cliffs. We followed this path almost entirely (it would start from Sutton, but in December the sun sets early here and it gets dark at four, we didn't want to risk getting caught). We started from the south side, reaching the famous Baily lighthouse, and then going up to Howth, a delightful fishing village. Today I don't think many fishermen can afford a home here: we have seen spectacular villas, worthy of the French Riviera; nevertheless, local fish still arrives in Howth and there are many renowned restaurants where you can end the day in a worthy way.
Our experience, made in December, was surprising: the sea and the sky were grey, but the cliffs were covered with expanses of yellow flowers similar to brooms. A show!
Done with Luca and Dario on 8/12/2023. 5km and 120 m of altitude difference.

APPROACH
We used a lift to get to the starting point but right there is the "Ceanchor road" stop where the 6 bus to Howth passes.
Howth can be reached by rail. Furthermore, even late in the evening you can find taxis to return after dinner.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL
MODERATE
Please see the profile for guidance on my personal difficulty scale.
The trip is an easy hiking itinerary. The path is wide, without steep slopes, well maintained and with clear signs at the intersections. Only people who suffer from vertigo may find themselves in difficulty. Although the trail is never truly exposed, it runs along the edge of high, precipitous cliffs. We also found several puddles and unavoidable stretches of mud.

ITINERARY

Take Ceanchor road downhill (1) straight ahead until you come to the coastal path (2) where you turn left (3). The path passes on the edge of precipitous cliffs and at the foot of breathtaking villas. You arrive at the cape where the Baily lighthouse stands (8). Continue on the path. After a final detour (10) from which it is possible to return to civilization, a long stretch now awaits us in which we can only see the moorland, the cliffs and the sea. When the path ends (15) you take a small road that leads to the village (17).

You pass through a sector of well-kept villas. Follow the road to the end, going straight to the start of the path. More or less on the other side of the road there is a path that goes over the hill and which would allow you to complete the ring.

The beaches we will encounter are stony and beaten by the waves. This is probably the best swimming area.

The actual lighthouse cannot be reached. We continued on the path that runs along the cliff. However, if you want, you can also go back and take the main path from the road.
