Pleasant walk from the center of Baska to the beaches of Vela Luka and Mala Luka.
The route follows route number 9 indicated on the hiking map distributed free of charge by the Baska tourist office.
The path is marked with a rectangular pictogram consisting of two horizontal white bands, interspersed with a red horizontal band.
It is well marked and easily visible, in the stretches where it intersects other itineraries I have however inserted Waypoints.
The route follows one way, for the return it is possible either to travel the entire itinerary in the opposite direction, or to return to Vela Luka (20 minutes walk back from Mala Luka end point) to book a "boat taxi" at cost 13 € (on average it must be called 1 hour before the departure time to allow the operator to fit the needs of passengers) for the port of Baska.
The initial stretch is on asphalt, uphill steeply at 18%, then passes on a dirt road that climbs up a bumpy path surrounded by the Istrian stone mountains and magnificent dry stone walls that delimit the goat pastures in the winter months.
As the southern part of the island of Krk was not reforested by the Austrians in the 19th century (as happened in Cres and Lošinj), the route is fully exposed only for the entire itinerary.
It is important in the summer months to have both a hat and a water supply of at least 2 liters.
In Vela Luka there is however a bar-restaurant with an asbestos roof which also has free toilets.
The water from the taps is not drinkable, in case it is necessary to stock up on water, the bar must be purchased.
Going up you can see the typical shrubs of the Mediterranean scrub such as inula viscosa, dog rose, bramble, wild asparagine, helichrysum.
The climb is challenging and leads to 180 meters above sea level in Lubnin.
From here you gradually descend until you cross the Vrzenica canyon which descends (with yellow path number 10 to the sea).
Path number 10 is challenging and it is advisable to follow it in a group.
Arriving at the canyon, the climb continues up to Rebica from here begins the long and technically treacherous descent to the two beaches below.
In addition to the slope, the difficulty is given by the landslide made of stones.
I have indicated the two points of greatest risk, it is necessary to proceed with caution, paying attention both to where you put your feet and, in case of rain and wind, to the sound of any falling rocks.
The descent leads to the magnificent beach of Vela Luka, with bathrooms and bar-restaurant, from here with an easy 20-minute walk you arrive at the second splendid beach in Mala Luka.
In summer it is not recommended to take the walk during the hottest hours.
