Itinerary description
This is an 20km extension of the 80 km Travers–Sabine Circuit that incorporates an additional pass from Blue Lake into the D'Urville. It reaches deep into the heart of the mountains of Nelson Lakes National Park. Tranquil beech forests, fields of waving tussocks, 2000 metre-high mountains and clear rushing streams are highlights of the journey.
The circuit requires 7-10 days to complete and involves a crossing of Travers Saddle and Moss Pass, alpine passes subject to freezing conditions at any time of year. This trip should only be attempted by experienced parties with navigation and river crossing skills.
Whilst the track incorporating the Travers-Sabine circuit is classified as a tramping track the remainder is a well trodden route. There are some major rivers unbridged crossings of the D'Urville which require river crossing skills. Sturdy boots and a good standard of fitness are recommended and warm, waterproof clothing is essential.
