Itinerary description
This a fun hike with a lot of elevation gain. We did this hike in August which is the worst time for lawyer vines (wait-a-whiles) which there is many on the way to and past Boyd's Butt. Careful of the occasional stinging tree. There is two ascents to the top of east peak. The first is usually taped and follows the northern ridge. However, the ridge is accessed by traversing south along the base of the cliff to within 200m of the eastern ridge line then follow an obvious route up exposed rock and tree roots enabling a relatively easy access to the peak. The second is 100m further and is the usual ascent from Garden of Eden Rd. While your at the eastern ridge and the bottom of the cliffs enjoy a 20m side trip to Mt Cougal Cave. The entrance is hidden behind a large boulder; however these days an obvious trail leads to this gem. Take a head lamp, the cave is dark and continues through to the southern face. However, you will need to be skinny to squeeze through the last section and prepared to get dirty. The trek to west peak is the most enjoyable part of this hike. There is many options from the saddle to west peak due to multiple horizontal ledges. Easier options are on lower ledges; however, for the best views follow the ridge line proper for as long as possible. keep an eye out for the orchids flouring early spring and try not to step on them. The southern face of west peak is covered. Watch out for the cliff when searching, the first step is a doosie!
