Itinerary description
No car required. From Curral das Freiras: ask bus driver to drop you at the hamlet of Fajã Escura. At the top of the village, take the cement path on your right. Way up to Boca do Cerro is steep, but simple , no chance to get lost. At Boca do Cerro, the way to Pico Grande is indicated. The path is on a cliff, but safe with barriers and cables. At top of Pico Grande, you can climb the rock and admire the magnificient landscape on Pico Ruivo, Encumeada, Paúl da Serra. Go back to Boca do Cerro and continue the walk to Boca da Corrida, a few meters underneath are bus stops to Funchal (bus 96 Rodoeste). I continued for 1km downhill to Corticeiras.

Did this today. Picked up bus 81 opposite savoy to curral da freiras on arrival jumped onto smaller bus to faja Escudo. Then straight up hill onto the trail. 3.5 hour walk with fantastic views. Down from Corrida car park to Marcos bar to await the 81 bus back to Carlton bus stop Note bus waits upto 15 minutes to get back on schedule. Bus stop is opposite the bar. May have to change busses half way home but next bus is waiting and use same ticket
