Itinerary description
As I searched for routes up this volcano and it seemed like there was only two ways. One was to take the Teleferiqo and hike from there or travel south to the town of Lloa and go from there. I want to put on my pack and hike from Quito without the help of trams, trucks and cabs. So by studying the download maps from Wikiloc, there appeared to be a trail that ascended to the top of the Teleferiqo that I could access right from Quito. So one day, I packed up my backpack and started walking from Quito towards the base of the Teleferigo. I easily found a trail, which started as a road, but then turned to single track. Took a few wrong turns, but found my way up to the top of the Teleferiqo. Had not planned it, but I continued towards Rucu... it was a beautiful day. Route could not be easier to follow. I reached about 4500 meters and the trailed turned steep with loose dirt/gravel. I quickly realized my hiking sandals were not going to cut it. In addition, it was mid to late afternoon and clouds had now covered the summit. I decided to turn and head down and summit this one another day... now that I knew the exact route. I started recording late (above the base of the Teleferqo) and stopped recording when I turned, so this rout appears short, but it is not. My hiking route started at Plaza Foch and finished at 4500 meters, below the summit of Rucu. Next week I plan on hiking from Plaza Foch and summit both Cumbre Rucu and Cerro Guagua Pichincha. Will try to post that one once complete.
