Itinerary description
This is a challenging hike through North Cowichan's community forest up to and beyond Crofton Lake.
Mostly in the shade of a beautiful mixed forest with some sections along decommissioned logging roads. There are peek-a-boo views of Saltspring Island and Quamichan Lake.
Crofton Lake, once the town of Crofton’s backup water supply, is a pleasant spot for a lunch break. It is an artificial lake (ie. a reservoir). The dead trees you see in the lake are a drowned forest, the result of not cutting them down before the reservoir was filled.
The locals told us that mink and beaver inhabit the lake.
Beware! These trails are shared by mountain bikers who can hurtle down the steep sections without warning and minimal options to avoid hikers.
The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an AVA rating of 3C.
