Itinerary description
Croagh Patrick offers superb views due to its isolation and prominence. Most people climb the mountain via the Pilgrim's route. This is a wide and eroded trail, very crowded and quite steep in its final part. You can however partly avoid the crowds by accessing the mountain via its east or west ridge. A great walk is to traverse the summit and both ridges, but you'll need transport on both ends of the walk then.
This gps trail ascends via the pilgrims's route and descends the west ridge. This ridge looks quite impressive from below, but is in fact an easier and less steep descent than the standard route. After the first col the path disappears, but the ridge over Ben Goram is easy terrain. The roadwalk back to Murrisk offers good views of the ridge. If you want to avoid the roadwalk arrange for a second car or try to get a lift.
