Itinerary description
Technical difficulty: 1/5
--
This is an easy and short hike which begins in the coastal town of Crikvenica.
It goes through the historic Love Path (Ljubavna cestica in Croatian). The Love Path was created in the early 1930s. Supposedly, it got its name because it became a favorite place for couples in love. It's an 8-kilometre-long trail that offers a blend of nature and historical heritage.
No special equipment is needed to complete the trail. It's family-friendly, and the only marginally more demanding part is the short ascent from "Lokvica" to "Kavranova stena". Mobile reception is available throughout. There's plenty of shade available, also.
Be aware that the path doesn't offer any notable sea-views until you reach the peak.
Waypoints
Parking
Big parking lot in Crikvenica, was free of charge in the non-summer seasons.
Intersection #1 / to 'Kavranova stena'
One of the official entrances to the "Ljubavna cestica" (eng. Love Path).
Intersection #3 / to 'Gradina'
Continue in the same direction, towards the ruins of the Badanj fortification (eng. Badanj gradina)
Intersection #4 / to 'Gradina'
Continue towards "Gradina" (the Badanj fortification).
Badanj fort ruins
The ruins of the Badanj fort. Located in the immediate vicinity of Crikvenica, Badanj Fort is the oldest surviving medieval fortification in the Vinodol region. The fort was abandoned after a major earthquake in the 14th century. Archaeological finds suggest that the core of the fort was built in the Early Byzantine period between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.
Viewpoint #1
One of the few official viewpoints on the trail, though the whole path is beautiful and a pretty photo can be snapped at anytime.
Intersection #6 / to 'Lkovica & Kavranova Stena'
Continue towards "Lokvica", and immediately afterwards the short ascent on karst terrain will begin towards the peak Kavranova stena.
Lokvica (eng. Small Pond)
As it's name suggests, it's a small and unremarkable natural pond.
Kavranova stena (301m)
"Kavranova stena" is the peak of this short hike. It makes up for its lack of height with the beautiful and unobstructed view it offers on the Kvarner bay. The trail can be continued further on the so called "Staza krša i kuša" (eng. The Path of Karst and Sage). Sage is an aromatic herb native to the area. The Path of Karst and Sage leads to the Sopalj lookout point (321m), and then descends towards the coast and returns to Crikvenica by the sea where you can return to the starting point of the hike. It's about 14km long in total.
Intersection #7 / continue straight
This intersection marks another official entry (or in our case, exit) to the Love Path. You continue straight on the asphalt road through the town, until you reach the starting point.
