Itinerary description
Day 1: Get to Agia Irini church (600m) and walk down Agia Irini Gorge to its bottom (100m), then up to Koustogerako village (500m) where some accommodation is available. and -/+500m total.
Day 2: Walk from Koustogerako (500m) up to Omalos village (1100m). and +600m total.
Day 3: Walk down Samaria Gorge to Agia Roumeli village (0m). 16km and -1200m total.
Day 4 offers several alternatives since there's no road in Agia Roumeli village:
a. Take a ferry out either to Sougia or to Chora Sfakion villages, where roads and transport are available.
b. Walk east along Crete south coast towards Chora Sfakion village, where roads and transport are available. A full day relatively level walk with nice scenery and beaches.
c. Walk west along Crete south coast towards Sougia village, where roads and transport are available. A full day walk with some tough ups and downs, but nice scenery and beaches. Optional: continue west the next day to Paleochora town via the archaeological site of Lissos.
d. Walk north back up Samaria Gorge - a strenuous 1200m ascent.
