Itinerary description
Sarakina Gorge is about 1.5 km long; its width varies between 10 and 3 meters, while its walls reach 150 meters in height. Despite its small size, its features create a very impressive setting. The walk along the gorge takes an hour and the outlet is at a wide stream, which flows into the sea a few kilometers further on, near the coastal village of Mirtos.
This is short hike of approximately 6km from the town of Mírtos to Sarakina gorge near Mýthoi.
ATTENTION:
The GPS track reaches the start of Sarakina gorge but does not cover it in its entirety. It is possible to hike all the gorge and, after a circular tour, to return to the asphalt road.
It is possible to reach Sarakina gorge by car and park just before the beginning of the path to the gorge.
THE HIKE:
Start in Mirtos. After crossing the city center, continue on asphalt for 1km. Take the path that partly runs alongside the asphalt road and slightly gains altitude. The path is wide and well traced but with very little signage. Stick to the GPS track in case you lose the trail. After about 4 km you'll arrive in the town of Mytoi where there is a bar/restaurant with very welcoming hosts and where you can have lunch once the visit to the gorges is finished. I recommend the delicious Greek salad.
From Mythoi you go along the asphalt road to the car park before the start of the path. For those coming by car, this is a great place to leave it.
The path to the gorges starts steeply and runs alongside a small stream of water. Once you have entered the gorges, you proceed between large boulders equipped with ropes. The GPS track ends before going through the Sarakina gorges.
TIPS:
It is important to be adequately equipped with trekking shoes, clothing suitable for the climatic conditions, and a good amount of water. In summer, avoid walking the path during the hottest hours of the day
GOOD PRACTICES:
When hiking trails in forests and protected areas, it's essential to follow principles of environmental stewardship. Respect wildlife by observing from a distance, stay on designated trails to avoid damaging vegetation, and carry out any trash you bring in. Minimize noise to preserve the natural tranquility and refrain from disturbing habitats. Leave no trace to ensure the preservation of these natural spaces for future generations.
SARAKINA GORGES:
Sarakina Gorge, also known as Sarandapichos Gorge, offers captivating experiences year-round. Summer invites hiking, while spring beckons canyoning adventures. Visitors should pack a change of clothes for water crossings. According to legend, the gorge formed when the giant Sarandapichos split the mountain with his beard. Lush vegetation, pools, waterfalls, boulders, and rock arches adorn the gorge.
