Itinerary description
Beautifull hike on the E4 path starting in Chóra Sfakíon and ending in Loutro. From Loutro it's possibile to go back to Chóra Sfakíon by boat or ferry.
The first part of the route, immediately after leaving the town of Chóra Sfakíon, takes place on an asphalt road until reaching the entrance to path E4.
The first stretch of the path is not to be underestimated and must be walked with suitable shoes because, in some points, it is narrow, bumpy and exposed overlooking the sea. There are parts equipped with chains to facilitate the passage. The path, after crossing some cliffs, allows you to reach the wonderful Glyka Nera beach
Continuing on the path, you gain altitude (there are some exposed sections) and then it becomes flat an easy. You'll find the beautiful and iconic Chapel of Timios Stravos.
Along the way you come across other very small deserted beaches where you can spend part of the day and take a swim.
Continuing to follow the path you reach Loutro, a former fishing village now converted into a tourist attraction. Here all services are available: ATM, accommodations, restaurants, bars and ferries that can take you back to Chóra Sfakíon or Agia Rumeli.
TIPS
It is important to be adequately equipped with trekking shoes, clothing suitable for the climatic conditions, and a good amount of water. In summer, avoid walking the path during the hottest hours of the day
GOOD PRACTICES:
When hiking trails in forests and protected areas, it's essential to follow principles of environmental stewardship. Respect wildlife by observing from a distance, stay on designated trails to avoid damaging vegetation, and carry out any trash you bring in. Minimize noise to preserve the natural tranquility and refrain from disturbing habitats. Leave no trace to ensure the preservation of these natural spaces for future generations.
ALONG THE PATH:
E4 PATH:
The European Long Distance Path E4 begins in Tarifa, Spain, traversing France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece, before concluding in Larnaca, Cyprus. Along the Cretan section, the landscape varies greatly, featuring pine forests, sandstone cliffs, caves, gentle slopes with low vegetation, gorges, and breathtaking beaches. The Greek section has been designed and marked by the Greek Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, attracting thousands of outdoor enthusiasts and hikers annually. It offers excellent trails of various lengths and difficulty levels, catering to a wide range of preferences.
CHORA SFAKION:
Chóra Sfakíon is a quaint village boasting a harborfront lined with charming tavernas, along with two minimarkets, a butcher, and a bakery. West of the village lies a serene local beach, complemented by several nearby pebbly beaches. Accommodation options abound, ranging from rooms and studios to apartments, catering to tourists' needs. The village's economy thrives on tourism, fishing, olive oil production, as well as sheep and goat herding, highlighting its diverse livelihoods.
LOUTRO:
Loutro, situated at the site of the ancient city of Phoenix (Finikas), served as the port town of ancient Anopolis and was a significant harbor during Hellenistic and Roman eras. Over time, it became the winter port of Sfakia due to its natural shelter from severe weather. Although ancient Phoenix has vanished, its name lives on in the small village west of Loutro. Historically, Loutro was utilized by Saracen pirates as a base for attacking ships in the region. The Venetians later expelled the pirates and fortified Loutro with a small fortress, while evidence of Turkish presence is seen in another well-preserved fortress.
