Itinerary description
A beautiful hike which in English translates to “Footpath of the San Lorenco Bridge”
Ponta de São Lourenço is a Nature Reserve located on the easternmost part of Madeira, is a Nature Reserve.
Blessed with stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean waves crashing against the tremendous cliffs and spectacular volcanic rock formations which is a completely different landscape to the rest of the island.
It is the habitat of numerous species of unusual plants such as the escarcha, the woolly salad, the thistle and bad muchas. In the area below the beach there is a protected play area called Prainha, the only natural play area in the black arena of the island. It is very popular with locals and is ideal for swimming.
We were quite disappointed that we’d not taken our swimming gear as the clear blue waters looked very inviting.
The only building in this protected area: Casa da Sardinha which is located in a sheltered valley just before the final climb where you can stop for refreshments etc
The route ends in the Furado's penalty, through the hole that has, with a demanding climb but very well built based on steps. From up there we can see the different islands that make up this bay, as well as the isolated islands and the island of Porto Santo, among the evicted days.
A highly recommendable route of medium difficulty due to the undulating nature of the trail.
