Itinerary description
This trail follows the Cowichan River (more or less) before winding South toward Shawnigan Lake and ultimately to Victoria on an easy railroad grade. It is also known as the "Trans Canada Trail" and the "Great Trail." This segment begins at Trestle 66 east of Skutz Falls off of the Cowichan River Bottom Road in Cowichan River Provincial Park. There is a parking lot and a pit toilet just off the footpath to the trestle. After crossing the trestle continue straight ahead. From here on, it is all natural woodland. The trail leaves the river at first, but after a few kilometers, the Cowichan River rejoins it. Several creeks and interesting side trails cross it on their way to the river. The path is unimproved rail bed. There can be a few muddy spots. Notable is the encompassing natural forest with no hint of habitation. Distance out and back = 8.43K (about 2 hrs).
