Itinerary description
Started at Rhodes Lake then hiked cross-country due East in Section 21 until we got to CR 2685. We walked along 2685 north until we reached the Forest Service gate, then crossed 2690 and climbed the Forest Service Fence into Section 16, because there was no gate. We followed the eastern fence line NW about 1/2 mile, crossed a dry creek bed, then walked a couple of hundred yards north to the gas well and fence where 2691 takes a 90 degree turn to the NW. We followed the 2691 fence line NW, then headed due north cross-country. We crossed a 2nd dry creek bed and then walked north about 1/2 to 3/4 mile across open grasslands, until we reached the top of a low rise, which we named Cow Pie Hill. We made camp there. To shorten this trip you could park next to the gas well at 2691 and hike north along the fence line from there. 2691 is not shown on the official Forest Service map, but it hits 2690 about 1 mile +- east of Rhodes Lake. Section 16 is a nice, isolated area of the park. I forgot to turn off the recorder when we got back to the car.

This is a low rise with a good view of the grasslands to the south and east. We had to cleanup a few patties, hence the name. But it was a nice level spot with plenty of firewood.

Did you hike from beginning to end??? https://www.wikiloc.com/outdoor-trails/cow-pie-hill-5678511#wp-5678512/photo-3016803
We hiked from Rhodes Lake, cross country to Cow Pie Hill, and back. R/T distance was probably about 6 miles. The map shows 13 because I forgot to turn my GPS off when we finished. https://www.wikiloc.com/outdoor-trails/cow-pie-hill-5678511#wp-5678512/photo-3016803
Thanks Brad! I hiked this route today and put it on wikiloc. Your campsite location, also picture on Cow Pile Hill looks fantastic!!! https://www.wikiloc.com/outdoor-trails/cow-pie-hill-5678511#wp-5678512/photo-3016803
Cool, I'm glad you found it! Another good cross-country LBJG hike is to the top of Bald Knob Hill. It's the highest point in Wise County, which isn't saying much, but you can park at the main equestrian campground and it's a moderate 17 miles r/t. I don't have a GPS route for it but I know the route and section numbers. I took our scout troop up there years ago and we camped overnight on the hilltop. https://www.wikiloc.com/outdoor-trails/cow-pie-hill-5678511#wp-5678512/photo-3016803
