Itinerary description
To get there take N25. At Lemybrien take the R676 for 8.5 K. Start at the car park at Kilclooney wood. There is a well worn path through the wood westwards until its joins a forest road turn right take this road until its runs out, then along narrow path through the wood as far as the northern edge of the wood. Cross a fence and follow a stone wall uphill to the northwest edge of the wood. Take a northwest direction to the southern ridge of the corrie, at a large bolder the return track rejoins this path. Continue on the ridge heading to a large rocky outcrop from this point you will be required to do some mild scrambling. These rocks lead to an easy grassy path with spectacular views. The last scramble up to the plateau must be taken with great care and is not suitable for inexperience walkers, from here a cliff edge path will bring you around the rim of the corrie to Stookanmeen 407m Proceed along the northern ridge and descend on a path through a bolder field, stay on this path until you reach the grassy lower slopes take a southern direction along this path until the lake comes into view again, take the path heading to the base of the lake at this point you can see a path rising on the southern ridge in the direction of the large bolder on the ridge this path rejoins the start of the route you will now be within sight of the wood and the main road R676 below. Allow 4 ½ hours for this walk.
