Itinerary description
More of a stroll than a hike, this trail takes you through the old Industrial Timber Mill (ITM) site to the mouth of Cottonwood Creek. There are pleasing views of Cowichan Lake and the surrounding hills from the beach there.
ITM, was the largest mill on the Lake and the heart of the once thriving community of Youbou. The mill was gone entirely by 2001, but along the route of this hike there are still remnants of it & the activity that took place there.
Notes:
1) This route is only possible in the summer/early fall. The crossing at the mouth of the Creek was bone dry at the time of this hike but is raging with water once the winter rains start.
2) The part of the route from waypoint #26 back to the trailhead may require walking along a busy logging road. We parked a second vehicle at waypoint #26 to shuttle back to the trailhead.
The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an AVA rating of 1A.
