Itinerary through another park in Croatia, the Paklenica National Park, which together with the Sjeverni Velebit National Park (Northern Velebit) form the Velebit Natural Park, a UNESCO-recognized Velebit Massif Biosphere Reserve.
Velebit is part of a karst relief mountain range in southern Europe, the Dinaric Alps. Paklenica National Park is home to the karst gorge of the Paklenica River on the southern slope of Velebit, with the imposing and deep Velika Paklenica (large) and Mala Paklenica (small) gorges rising from the sea to the highest peaks. of Velebit. The park is full of curious karst forms, caves and thanks to its varied climate, it has a rich flora and fauna. Its cliffs are an attraction for climbers.
We walked from the hotel where we were staying and headed to Marasovic near the entrance to Paklenica National Park. To enter the park you have to pay entry, as in other parks. Shortly after the entrance we reach an old mill and cross the river by a wooden bridge to take a path that goes in the middle of a forest and thus avoid the road. The trail ends and we cross the river again by a wooden bridge. We are close to the bunker, in the 50's of the last century a bunker was built on the rocks of the gorge that currently houses a visitor center.
We enter the steep vertical walls, a paradise for climbers, it is an important climbing center with the monumental rock Anika Kuk. Shortly after passing Anika Kuk, we turn right onto a path that crosses the river and climbs to the top of the gorge in the middle of a beech forest. The views from up here are spectacular we see the Adriatic. After planning for a while we go down to the beautiful Paklenica mountain refuge where we have lunch.
We return along the path below, passing by the shelter of the ranger, the Lugarnica. We continue the same way we came to the accommodation.
