Fountain
This is one of the fountains of Competa. They don’t know how old Competa is. But where water is, is life. 30 km west of competa they found the bones of Neanderthalers of 35000 years ago. They are now in the archealogical museum in Malaga. In Nerja there are caves with paintings of 15000 years ago. So life started very early here. Known life of Competa started in the Roman times. Competa orum means crossroads. There was a mule road from the coast to Granada. South to north and a roman army road from east to west. On the crossroad there was a settlement where they could refill there water. From April to October it can be very dry here. After the romans the Visigoth stayed here untill 700 the Mores conquered all of Spain. All the way to the Pyrenees. They stayed here more then 7 centuries untill they were driven away by the conquista. I will show you a Moorish fortress when we go up. There were 15000 soldiers 1492 the last moorish kingdom fell. The Moores had to convert to christianity. The ones who didn’t had to go back to Africa. The ones who stayed kept their culture and believes. Under king Philips the rules became stricter and he came to kill more then 9000 Moriscos and the After that time the area became very depopulated. Good Catholic farmers from mid spain came here and after that time till now, Competa is a good catholic village.
