Itinerary description
Colquhoun Tower was erected in 1929 by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Cochrane District was home to 20 Fire towers. These stations were placed so the towermen could maintain radio contact with other towers in the area. Two week long shifts were spent recording all happenings in the district. Colquhoun Tower is one of the only fire towers still searching for that distant trail of smoke, after their retirement in 1969
Once you turn off HWY 11, drive down a gravel, though grassy, road and follow it until you reach a curve in the road, this is your parking point approx. 3 or so minutes down the road. There is a standing structure of some type, close to the parking area, so if you go past this, you have gone to far. You will see a grassy ATV Trail that you can either ATV down or walk down, depending on the bugs and on your adventuring needs.
Following this path to the right, pay attention to the various birds in the tree's the flutter above your head, and the endless amounts of tracks from the various animals that use this trail on a daily basis. You will soon come to a slight opening, and you will see a turn sign for the snowmobile Trail that is in this area during the winter, at this point you will turn left and follow the snowmobile trail to the base of the mountain. Be careful on the rocks, if it is raining it will be slippery.
