Colonnes basaltiques
Geological formation composed of regular columns. It results from the solidification and thermal contraction of a basaltic flow shortly after its emission. The lower part, which cools or dries more slowly, fractures from the surface to the depth in the form of sub-vertical prisms with a hexagonal section of decimetric order. These columns are surmounted by a zone of smaller, less regular prisms (or "false prism") that can be combined into sheaves.
