Itinerary description

There are several trails and roads to go from Cohoni to Illimani. The advantages of this path are: it follows a stream (very clean water), is not close to roads or villages (so, it is possible to see wild fauna as condors, foxes, viscachas, among others) and it has a beautiful view of the valleys.

This trip is planned for 3 days.
Day 1: You can get the buses to Cohoni from the corner General Luis Lara and Boqueron and the ticket costs 20-30 Bs, it is recommended to take the bus at 6-7 am. The ride takes around 4-5 hrs depending on the weather and the driver. Once you reach the town, you have to start walking by the left and surrounding the hill (Calvario). You can climb it, but it is a very steep ascent. This day, you can walk for 4-5 hrs or until step away from the fields (crops), there you can find some flat lands in which is possible to camp (4000 m.a.s.l).

Day 2: The water stream is on the left slope and it goes directly to the mountain. The most tricky part is to find it, there are not many visual references, therefore I recommended to use a GPS. You have to follow the stream, until you can see a car road above, then you have to find a good way to reach it. It is possible to camp on the Illimani slope, there are some flat lands on the side of the road (4500 m.a.s.l).

Day 3: (Exploring the Illimani is optional). Even a partial climbing to the Illimani is dangerous! There are not trails and you have to cross moraines (very rocky slopes) or climb some walls. Please be very cautious if you decide to do it. In this GPS track there are two suggested trails, one is on the side of the mountain (an abandoned car road) and the other one is climbing, there are many ruins on the last one (5000 m.a.s.l).

To go back to La Paz, you have to follow the car road towards the south or If you stand looking to the mountain follow the right (It is not recorded by GPS, but is it marked by Google maps). The road has a branching point, if you want to go to Cohoni follow the right, if you want to go to Urania mine, you have to take the left (going down into the valley). It takes between 3-4 hrs walking to reach Cohoni, consider that after 4 pm is hard to find buses to La Paz and during Sunday is even harder (or maybe impossible).
