Itinerary description
A hike along the Wild Coast from Coffee Bay to Lubanzi. A good trip through the small town of Coffee Bay and then along the coastline, sometimes inland often right along the coastline. Loads of scenery and with noticeable elevation changes as you go from sea level to viewpoints and back. Also it will really help to manage your hike by crossing the river at Hole in the Wall (Mpako river) at low tide (or be prepared to swim across). Locals will assist for a fee.
There are several places to stay in Coffee Bay and there's a hostel at Lubanzi that caters to backpackers. We hiked the route in both directions and took a slightly different path on way back to Coffee Bay.
The Hole-in-the-wall is a popular site with a nice beach and a couple of spots for food and beverage as well as a few places to stay. We wanted to see and assess the river crossing so we ate our lunch on the banks of the river. Lines drawn in the sand will quickly tell you if the tide is coming in or going out. We timed it well, the currents were strong and thigh deep, but the water was warm.
With a jagged coast line and numerous paths (and no signage) navigation is difficult. You will need a detailed map, a download of the GPS for this trail or you can pay a local to show you the way.
Very enjoyable hike, scenery is excellent.
