Itinerary description

Wonderful walk but it is affected by tides. I commenced walk an hour/hour and half after high tide from Clogherhead (also known as Oriel) Port
If you go at wrong time you possibly will be walking over rocks on beach and areas where sand is v soft so difficult to walk on.

Can cross stream on beach on low tide without feet wet or otherwise go up the road here as I did to reconnect to beach. Also if one continues up road one can connect to Baltray for alternative loop walk with Baltray. See trail posts from others on Wikiloc to see how they did it.

Sand dunes

I tried to stick to sand dunes here but there is a poor trail (plus could damage dunes & disturb birds nesting) unless one goes on golf course which golfers would not appreciate so shortly after here I rejoined the beach.

Volunteers patrol area during nesting season. One of only a few areas in the country where there is Little Tern nesting in numbers. The Little Tern chicks are vulnerable to dogs and people walking in nesting area and chicks vulnerable to gulls attaching and eating the chicks. The number of chicks that grow to adulthood can be quite low.

Baltray is a welcome stopping spot with seats and tables. The 19th Bar close by offers refreshments. The road that runs north by the side of the pub can be taken to link up as alternative loop back to Termonfeckin though busy at weekends with traffic.

This trail is affected by tides. I left Clogherhead Port (also known as Oriel Port) about an hour/hour and a half after high tide. After getting to Baltray and having 30 minute stop for something to eat I was back on beach and the tide still had an hour before it was due to turn.

This is a really beautiful walk and I suggest you make it your own rather than sticking to my map. Walking at water's edge as tide goes out beyond Clogherhead beach is a nice alternative. As the tide is out on was back there will be a number small waterways and pools on the sands that change over time so these will affect choices, however, when the tide is out in Baltray beach area you can walk out to water's edge and there is generally good firm sand all the way back to ship wreck (you'll spot it on the Baltray beach) and even Terminfeckin beach.

Put on the sunscreen and note it can be quite exposed if there is an easterly wind.
