Itinerary description
Few walks manage to combine an urban and nature setting in one outing as well as this one does. Matera is touristy, sure it is; but it is also a UNESCO heritage site and has a history dating back over 10'000 years. Known for its old centre, or Sassi which is cut out of the local rock, Matera provides an intriguing setting.
You will pass key locations - such as the Palazzo dell'Annunziata, Palazzo Lanfranchi, Matera Cathedral and the Tramontano Castle - and also cross the Matera Gravina by hangbridge and climb onto the Murge plateau. On this side, you will find rock churches scattered on the slopes if you venture further afield, and will be presented with good views toward Matera.
Quite frankly, this walk is a must-do. Decent footwear will help, the hike in and out the canyon is gravely and relatively steep in places. Alternatively you could also skip the gravina, but if you have the energy just give it a go: the rewards are plenty.
