Itinerary description

This route is off trail for the first part of the hike but offers a great short hike to the west of the Presa around the mountain immediately to the west of the presa, coming out to a lookout with panoramic views down to the water but also to the surrounding mountains. Instead of heading back down to the lake to complete the circuit, an alternative is to follow the dirt road to the south to the Hacienda Ruins (Nunez). The hiking is easy but requires an understanding of traveling off trail following the topography.

Rather than heading along the lakeshore, instead head up the left of the creek that supplies the Presa and to the right of a sharp valley coming down from the left. The trail will disappear but you can continue following the terrain uphill.

There are two ways to return to the lake. The trail to the right descends sharply and follows a narrow valley back to the presa. The creek is particularly wonderful from August through October but will dry up as the dry season approaches. The trail to the left follows the side of the hill to the left of the valley, descending more gently back to the Presa.

This creek can flow rapidly in the rainy season but dries up in the dry season.
