Itinerary description
This is a lovely walk that runs for a great part alongside the river Aude. We started at a place where there is ample room to park your car and followed the road to Cavirac, a little village that lies hidden between the river and the wooded mountains to the east of the village.
From the village a track follows the river with some beautiful views back to Belvianes, the village that is situated some 40 metres higher than Calvirac.and also on the beginning of the imposing Gorges de la Pierre Lys.
Arriving in Quillan we took the colourful and famous old Suzanna bridge to cross the river and followed the road alongside the raiway track towards the beginning of the woods where we followed the road in the direction of Col du Vent until that road makes a sharp curve to the right where we took a narrow track alongside an abandoned house that eventually took us to the Pic de Couirou, 457 m.
From there we took a track indicated by red/white ribbons that was quite steep at some times and took us to the disused railroad track from Quillan to Belvianes. If you want an easier descent you should take the path called Sentier de L'Amour Vert which also takes you to that disued railway track behind the youth hostel.
When we got to the youth hostel we took to the river again and followed a narrow track until we got to the road again which we crossed at a farm where they selll goat's cheese and behind that farm followed the disused railway track to Belvianes.
