Itinerary description

This is a rather complete city walk of the wonderful city of San Cristobal. This route visits the many, many churches this city has to offer as well as the extensive covered market. There are two steeper climbs on this city walk, making this hike a bit more difficult than the typical city walk.

The checkerboard pattern of the calles seems sometimes endless, but in San Cristobal there are enough buildings, churches and parks to make this city walk quite interesting. A first bit of green you see after 400 meters with a small park while 1,5 kilometer later the first steep climb of the day starts the visit to one of the many churches. It will cost a bit of effort to climb all the stairs, but you will have a lovely view over the city as a reward.

Between kilometer 4 and 5 you find the covered market and it sure is a lively place here. It can become very crowded here and in times of Covid you may want to avoid these places. I've got the impression that the locals don't believe in any viral outbreaks as literally no-one is wearing a face mask. The temperature of around 30 degree Celsius will certainly help with this as well. Sometimes this place feels a bit too nervous and although I like busy markets, this was a bit too crowded in my opinion.

The next big stop is again a church that is built on a top. This time the climb is even more steep, but you get the best view of the entire day for all your efforts. The church itself is also quite nice to see, but not the most beautiful one of the day. Throughout the city walk I see (a lot of) other churches, one even more beautiful than the other. When I finish this city walk after eight kilometers I've got a fairly good impression of the city and I think San Cristobal is one of the nicer cities in Mexico.

Churches, narrow paths, small parks and a covered market are only a few of the things you will see on this city walk. It made me appreciate the architecture and look of San Cristobal, but take into account that the two climbs to the churches are quite steep.
