Itinerary description
With private transport, we went the parking lot of the main hot springs. We continued on the dirt road up the valley towards the trail head. There is a major fork in the road when you get to a cluster of houses and llamas known as Casilla. Take the left road. Get as far as you can up the road and park when you can't go any further. We followed the curve of the valley and once it got steep, we followed the stream. However, I recommend staying to the right of the valley on your way up. There is faded trail that you can follow on that side of the valley, as we would discover on our way down. The trail is steep at some points, and there were a couple times I thought we were about to arrive at the lake, but we had to continue. Overall, it's not a terribly difficult hike, and the lake is more than worth the climb. If you feel like pushing yourself to do the complete hike, you would continue after the first lake and visit 2 more high altitude lakes (which are actually in Chile). Then, you would go down a parallel valley and finish your hike at the geysers. You can visualize it on the map.

Laguna Ch'iyar Quta
Big Mountain lake at 5000 meters above sea level. A wonderful reward after the steep climb.
