The Prachovské skály nature reserve is one of the most popular regions in the Czech Republic. It is one of the oldest natural reserves in the country.
The area was declared a nature reserve in 1933. In 2002, the efforts made by conservationists resulted in the incorporation of the Natura Prachovské skály Conservar in the Area of Cesky Raj Protected Landscape. It is recommended to begin a tour of the Skály Prachovské in Jičín, an ancient city with a good state of preservation, central monuments of the historical and numerous square. The Prachovské skály is about 6 km from Jičín, in the direction of Sobotka, through Holin and Prachov. There are two car parks at the entry points.
The short route is led by a narrow opening, rock only 35 cm wide, from here, we approach two well-known viewpoints and return through the Chisba Císařská between the solid rock blocks. The route takes around 3/4 of an hour.
The long series will take you through seven observation points, climbing the various stairs cut to the rocks and passing through narrow gaps between huge stones. The route is 3.5 km long and it takes about 2.5 hours.
Geology
The geological history of the Prachovské area is skály quite colorful, - the beginnings of sandstone formations go back to the Mesozoic era, when the territory was flooded with seawater. Millions of years later, the region was driven by the effects of the powerful tectonic powers, the flood went back and the breakdown of the seabed into separate blocks in which today's treasure of the Cesky Raj region formed : skály el suche, skály Prachovské, Hruboskalsko, skály Příhrazské, etc. for the gradual erosion, characteristic and unique in the world rocks formed, distinctive with tall stone towers and deep rock lagoons. During the Tertiary era, the new volcanic activity forms the landscape, leaving its footprint in the form of (residual) basalt volcanoes - hills of Velis, Zebín, Trosky, Vyskeř, etc., it has important landscape today dominant of the Cesky Raj region.
History
At some point in the middle of the 13th century, king Přemyslidas Otakar I. founded on the basalt hill a magnificent castle called Velis and Prachovské skály became a part of the real domains of Velis. The inheritance was not real property for a long time: in 1337 it was obtained by the Vartemberk family and later it was owned by several other noble families. In 1625 the inheritance of Velis was included in the property of the Duke of Frýdlant, Alberto Eusebi Valdštejn. After his death in 1634 the duchy was devastated. In 1637, the land of Velis and Prachovské skály went to Jindrich Schlik, one of the leaders of the revolt in 1620, and the commander-in-chief of the Moravian Army at the Battle of Bila Hora. After the lost battle, his cousin, Jáchym Ondrej Schlik, was arrested and executed in 1621 in the Plaza de la Ciudad Vieja de Praga. However, Jindrich Schlik entered the Imperial Army and developed a great career as a professional soldier. His property successors skály Prachovské until 1948 when ownership of the Schlik family was confiscated.
In 1993, it was restored and since the year 2000 the Schlik family has operated the tourist area of skály Prachovské on their own.
