Itinerary description
This is a wonderful walk if you like extensive views almost all the time.
We started this walk in La Barge where there is ample parking space near the Mairie and from the very beginning this walk is very pleasant.
During the very first part you will see the castle and the Barrage if you look back and the track along the circumference of the hill gives good views down into the valley.
After a beautiful stretch through the wood you will arrive at the hamlet Surgit at 920m. From there the track slowly rises to the highest point of the walk at 980m and from here on the views get and remain very extensive.
Descending to the Hamlet La Barry you will see the viaduct Garabit very clearly.
Leaving la Barry you will have a very lovely track through the open fields with magnificent views to the south and the west and you will also be able to see the Barrage.
After passing Languiroux the walk becomes even more interesting because of the majestic and dramatic descent towards Chateau Alleuze along a beautiful and narrow track, enjoying beatiful views of the castle and the lake all the time.
Arriving at the D40, in a bend of the road where there are alternative parking possibilities you could follow a track up to the castle, but we didn,t feel the need to do this.
From this bend we followed the track with the yellow markings up to La Barge but you could take the more direct but steeper track along the stations of the Cross instead.
This is a very beautiful walk indeed.
