This trail is no longer maintained. It is an ex-Sendero de Chile and although some infrastructure (bridges, old look-out points and the remains of an old refuge) can be found on the trail, it is impossible to follow the trail without a GPS track. A big Thanks to "senderosss" for providing a very detailed track. To reach the start of the trek you need to take a bus from Chonchi to Cucau and get out after a few kms at a turn-off to "Petanes" (tell the driver). From there you have to walk 15 kms on gravel road, or try to hitch hike. The start of the trek is not marked. Only with GPS it is possible to narrow down the "entrance". I was crawling and fighting probably a hour or so through dense forest until I decided to follow a little creek leading uphill. Then I saw the first sign of being right .- a few ribbons on some branches. Underground is very wet, spongelike vegetation and up in the wetland it is easy to get lost. Always check GPS, I am serious. Landscape is awesome and trek is challenging. Imo, way better than the Abtao-Trek. There is no camping possible until you reach the refuge. So if you start very early in the morning from Chonchi you have a long day of hiking ahead of you until you reach the refuge.
The way is overgrown at many stages. If you are focused you can still see a swath through the bushes and forest.
Arriving in Chanquín it is different. There is some forest work going on. I don't know if they try to re-establish this side of the trek or if it is just forestry work, but here too, it would be hard to find the actual start of the trek.
Anyway, have fun guys, this trek is adventurous and for explorer ;-)
La ruta está cortada. Cuando vas a separarte del lago han puesto una valla y un cartel prohibiendo el paso.
