The massive urbanization that has in- terested the Breuil basin from the se- cond postwar period is evident: passing from here you don't imagine that it was a mountain pasture. Till the thirties (construction of the car- riage road) the main activity of the Breuil pastures was the dairy cows-breeding for the production of the Fontina chee- se; the rural buildings, in fact, were in- habited only during the summer. The level grounds, situated near the pastures of Breuil, were cut down and the hay fed the animals or was carried by the sledges ("luèddze") till Valtournenche. carried by the sledges ("luèddze till Valtournenche. Nowadays the breeding is still practi- sed both close to the urban areas and to the high mountain pastures on the slopes of Dent d'Hérin, Matterhorn and the Cime Bianche Cols.
