Itinerary description
This beautiful mountain is located just outside the front door of Iliniza Mountain Lodge. The hike starts with a nice walk through the town of Chaupi, then continues on through surrounding smaller villages and farmlands. The first hour of the hike is very easy to navigate, as you follow the dirt roads. I did a little off-route adventure to try and carve my own path up the hill, which resulted in me covered in dirt and berry stains from falling so much in the tall grass- so for your own good just follow the path. Eventually you reach a split off from the dirt road, upwards towards the mountain. This trail is also quite straight forward until you reach a dense part of the vegetation (almost like a cave entrance). You’ll want to look for a small path to your right where the long grass has been flattened. Follow this thin trail up until you reach the peak! The path becomes a little unclear at times, and the last stretch is dense, but the peak gives a beautiful overview of the town of Chaupi, as well as the surrounding mountains. You’ll also want to make sure to use your GPS to follow the same path down, because it is easy to get lost in the thick grass. Overall, this is an easy hike to do for a chill day, that does not require much time or logistics to complete.
