El Cerro Cusín es un volcán poco conocido entre el Imbabura, el complejo Mojanda y el Cayambe. Llega a 3950 m en la cumbre, donde se abre una impresionante quebrada hacia el Lago San Pablo en el noroeste. Las dos variantes aquí descritas van por senderos en el lado norte de la montaña (sectores Angla y Ugsha). Las partes altas de páramo son zonas de captación de agua para las comunidades aledañas y son protegidas a través de reforestaciones. Esta caminata tiene bastante desnivel vertical (+1200 m), por lo que es apta para personas con muy buen físico.
SUBIDA: Empieza en el sector Ugsha, en una ex hacienda, ahora Asociación Plaza Pallares, donde hay unos edificios antiguos. Desde San Pablo del Lago salen buses cada 30-45 minutos hacia Angla. Se baja del bus en la intersección con la vía asfaltada "San Pablo - Zuleta". Seguir el asfaltado por 1,0 km hasta llegar a Ugsha a mano derecha. Coger el camino de tierra que pasa por los edificios de la asociación y llega después de 1,2 km a un bosque de eucalipto en las faldas del Cusín. A veces las personas trabajando en la ex hacienda piden una propina por dar paso a turistas. Es una opción estacionar su vehículo ahí y pagar por el cuidado si viene en carro propio.
También es posible contratar una camioneta en San Pablo del Lago que a uno le deja en Ugsha o incluso en el inicio del bosque de eucalipto (el precio esta entre USD 6,00 y 7,00 hasta Ugsha. Hay que tener cuidado de los perros en esta parte.
La subida en su gran parte es por un camino de tierra 4x4. La primera parte por el bosque es tipo zig zag llegar a unos tanques de agua y la zona de páramo. En ese punto el camino se dirige hacía adentro de la montaña. Después del gran incendio del 2019 que quemó por completo unos aprox. 300 ha las comunas vecinas con ayuda del MAE mejoraron este camino de tierra para que sirva de acceso fácil a las partes altas de la montaña. Llega hasta muy arriba y termina en el punto donde se cruza con la ruta por Angla (descripción abajo).
En un punto donde el camino hace una curva hacia la derecha parte un sendero a mano izquierda que lleva a una cresta (3780 m). Esta cresta tiene un rompe incendios que también - como producto del incendio del 2019 - es mantenido por los comuneros. Este se sigue hasta cerca de la cumbre, solo la última parte es sendero normal.
BAJADA: Para variar de ruta en el regreso se puede bajar de la cumbre por el mismo sendero de la subida hasta llegar a una bifurcación después de 1,2 km. Esta variante solamente es recomendable para personas con buen físico y un buen sentido de orientación! Es un sendero poco usado y por ende no está muy bien marcado, además tapado por vegetación.
En la bifurcación coger a mano izquierda por una ruta que sigue a unos polylepis reforestados. Cruza el punto donde termina el camino 4x4 de la subida. El sendero primero baja y después vuelve a subir a una puntita de 3700 m de altura. En este punto coger hacia mano izquierda ligeramente, por el sendero más marcado. Seguir por la cresta hasta la zona arbustiva y unos tanques de agua. Esta es la parte más inclinada (-35 % en promedio) y un poco cerrada por vegetación arbustiva. Hay un poco de ganado suelto en esta parte, pero no bravo.
Seguir por la ruta más usada sin desviarse por otros senderitos (no coger un sendero que cruza hacia el otro lado de la quebrada!) hasta entrar a un bosque de eucalipto que tiene salida hacia el centro de la comuna Angla por una quebrada con terrenos y casas. Una vez llegado a Angla se puede regresar en el bus a San Pablo del Lago.

Cerro Cusín is a somewhat neglected extinct volcano between the complexes of Imbabura, Mojanda and Cayambe. At the northwest side of its 3950 m high summit lies a huge canyon which provides impressive views over the Lago San Pablo and its surroundings. There are two good trails starting from Angla (30 min from San Pablo del Lago), located at the north side of the mountain. The high paramo zone of Cusín serves as a water source for the surrounding communities and there is some reforestation going on. The trail has +1200 m of vertical altitude difference and is therefore recommendable only for persons with a very good physical condition.
UP: There are buses to Angla (start of the trails) from the main square of San Pablo del Lago every 30-45 minutes. For the eastern trail (recommended for the ascent) one should get off the bus when this hits the paved road between San Pablo del Lago and Zuleta at its highest point (some 500 m from Angla Village in the direction of Zuleta). Follow the paved road until you reach Ugsha / Asociación Plaza Pallares, an ex hacienda, to your right. Take the dirt road passing by the buildings of the association until your reach an eucalyptus forest after about 1,2 km. Take the dirt road to your right side which leads into the forest. Sometimes people at the association charge a voluntary entrance fee. If you come by your own car you could probably ask the workers there for parking and pay them for taking care of your vehicle.
It is also possible to hire a pick-up in San Pablo del Lago which can bring you to Ugsha or perhaps even to the beginning of the eucalyptus forest (price to Ugsha USD 6,00-7,00). Beware of aggressive herding dogs!
The road crosses the forest going up in serpentines until it reaches the grass páramo zone of Cusín. The trail follows a dirt road which passes a white-painted water reservoir before it hits a little canyon which leads into the high parts of Cusín. After a big fire in 2019 the road has been cleared, so all terrain vehicles could reach this part.
At one point where the trail makes a curve to the right you can take the trail to your left (straight southern direction most of the time). This trail reaches a grassy crest which is hit by the trail at an altitude of 3780 m. The crest has a human made gully at its top which serves as a fire stopper and was also recently cleared and improved. Follow the gully to your right (southern direction) until your reach the summit. Before the real summit you have to cross some ups and downs over little ridges, where you probably have to use your hands.
DOWN: It is possible to use the same trail for the descent or take an alternative trail to the same village of Angla. For the alternative route take the same trail back until a split-up at about 1,2 km of distance from the summit. This trail is only recommended for persons with good sense of orientation, as it is not used very often and thus somewhat covered by vegetation, which makes following it not always easy.
At the split take the trail to your left, passing by some reforested polylepis trees and following the crest of the northern flank of the central canyon of the mountain. It crosses the end of the dirt road. The trail first descends to 3680 m and then ascends once again to a hilltop of about 3745 m. At this point the trail turns left in WNW direction and starts a steep descent down to the first cultivated fields and forests of Angla. At some points the trail has some shrubby vegetation growing in. At the beginning of the real shrubby zone at about 3150 m there can be some wild cattle grazing (don’t approach and pass by quickly!). Do not follow one trail that crosses to the other side of the quebrada, stay on the same side and find the right trail.
When you reach an eucalyptus forest take the middle of a little canyon, first over grassy terrain and then on a dirt road flanked by cultivated fields, which leads you straight down into Angla village. From the village take the same bus that brought you to San Pablo del Lago.
