This hike has been on my to-do list for several years and after hiking once a small part in the middle, I knew I had to come back one day to do this hike properly. This weekend I finally took the time to come back walk this hike. It was a very windy and cloudy day which gave it something extra special when the wind is blowing so strong through the gorge.
The track is quite overgrown at places and it's not always easy to find, but when using the trail more as a directional guide then an absolute trail, you get to enjoy the scenery and find your way along the edge.
The trail took me about 4 hours to complete, but that was not so much because of the length, but because I made frequent stops to take picture or to explore.
Please note that this trail follows the edge of the cliff and at some points somewhat narrow tracks on the side of the cliffs. So it's not suitable for young kids or people that are afraid of heights. But otherwise it's a great way to spend a day exploring. To me, it gives you an idea on how people may have lived in Matera centuries ago, without feeling like a tourist. When I was reading the books from Jean Marie Auel, this is how I imagined it may have looked.
Near the end of the trail, close to the church, I've hidden a geocache as I know that will attract some people to this area which is so much better than the tourist trap a few kilometers away.
I did this trail once again this weekend and it seems the landowner/farmer doesn't appreciate people walking over his land. There are now a few signs saying private land and on return from our walk, we found a note under our windshield explaining that the "Chiesa di Cristo La Selva" is also on private land and no longer accessible without prior approval.
So you may need to consider this before your walk...
