Fights of 10/26/1917 that bring Rommel from Jewscek to the top of Matajur
Path largely on the old truck except for the last part on a well marked trail: given the challenging vertical drop you need a good training ..
Rommel with his troops during the night of the 25th had infiltrated and conquered the country of Jewscek and discovered an unguarded section of the trench up to intercept the road truck.
We arrive by bus to Avsa we start to drive the truck up to cross the trench of the fourth defensive line restored and visited for a stretch. Continuing we arrive at the point where Rommel's troops went up the road, capturing a cannon-shaped autocolumn that was going to get in position. A little further on we pass to the side of the Cragonza mountain conquered and used as a post for heavy machine guns. From there we arrive at the saddle of the Mrzli theater of the most disconcerting episode of the battle. On the back of the saddle, the reserve battalions of the Salerno brigade were encamped, while further down the other side the rest of the brigade was fighting against the assault of the Silesian division.
With the disappearance of Rommel's troops, the Italian soldiers remained motionless as they were amazed: Rommel with great courage stepped forward by himself waving his white handkerchief as an invitation to surrender. After minutes of tension the Italian soldiers ran towards him, throwing the rifle around him and hoisted him on the shoulders happy that the war was over for them.
At the saddle we abandon the truck and go up a path on the top of Mrzli and from there to the ridge on the top of Matajur where at 11.40 on 26/10/1917 Rommel came after the surrender of the last 150 defenders.
From the top in half an hour we descend to the Pelizzo refuge where our three-day trek ends.
Trekking of three days organized by the Pro Loco of the Natisone Valleys http://www.nediskedoline.it/wpnediske/. Guide the writer and historian of the First World War Marco Pascoli who showed us the general strategy of the attack and on the ground the various phases of the battle.
