Itinerary description
Cautley Spout and The Calf loop from The Cross Keys Pub — Howgill Fells
This was a beautiful, long-overdue day to be back in the Howgill Fells area of the Dales. This is a stunning area with rolling hills, Cautley Spout waterfall, and it is simply sublime hiking country. Today was a particularly nice weather day to do a planned hard route. It was tough too, a particularly lumpy 21-kilometre route that had nearly 1,300 metres of ascent. All done in a gorgeous eight hours. I love Yorkshire folk too; they are so friendly on the hill. I had a great time with many a racing snake today doing a local event, along with hiking people of the same senile age group as me. A total of six Nuttalls were taken in on this route too: Calders (675m), The Calf (676m), Fell Head (639m), Bush Howe (623m), Randygill Top (624 m), and Yarlside (639m).
Parking: There is a moderate-sized car park adjacent to the Cross Keys Inn and Tea Room on the A683 just below Yarlside.
Route Description: This is a great route on mainly good paths. There is some off piste hiking, but nowhere is it uncomfortable underfoot. There are lots of steep ascents and decents, but nowhere unduly long. The views of the entire Howgill Range are super nice on this route.
Route Statistics: 20 kilometres with a whopping 1,300 metres of ascent done in an all in time of 7 hours 45 minutes.
