I have followed this trail  View more

I am from the United States and am on vacation to Peru. We had a free day and I wanted to do a hike, and settled on this one as I'm not acclimatized to high altitude. I rented a taxi for S/250 to take me and wait for me as I hiked. From central Arequipa, and it took a little over an hour to get to Sogay. The trail starts at the Sogay church (iglesia). The trail hikes up to a road, which leads to a more proper walking trail. It probably took me an hour and a half to reach the waterfall, though a good chunk of that was at the end trying to figure out how to cross the stream (see below).

Most of the trail is very easy to follow. Unfortunately, near the end, it was very unclear. You must cross the stream two times. I got wet up to about my knees. You might be able to avoid this by jumping dangerously on slippery rocks above a small waterfall, but I decided against that. The trail signage at the stream crossing is not good, and I probably would have stopped if I didn't have GPS tracks. Follow the graffiti on the rocks. Once you cross the stream, it is easy to follow the short remainder of the trail.

I found the atmosphere very enjoyable. The beginning of the trail looks out over farmland, but fairly quickly it changes into a canyon surrounded by large hills.

There is an aqueduct following much of the trail that is easy to access water from. I used a filtered water bottle to refill several times.
